The Merino Family Tree has extended its reach south of Pasadena into beautiful San Diego. Steven began his 4-year stay at San Diego State University this weekend and we miss him already. The move went fairly smoothly with only one forgotten critical item- Steven’s laptop charger. He is residing in one of the nicer residence halls on campus called Cuicicalli. He is in a suite shared with 7 other students, most of which have their own room. We opted to save nearly $4,000 a year and have Steven share a room. He is on the top floor (6th) of his building overlooking the swimming pool.

The campus is beautiful and the amenities are plentiful. Steven has access to a world-class gym with lap pool, basketball courts, racquetball courts, and bowling alley. His dorm is on campus, so getting to classes shouldn’t be a problem as Steven is used to rolling out of bed at the last possible second.

Here is a short video tour of Steven’s Dorm:

This was a very bittersweet weekend. We are all very excited for Steven, but we will certainly miss his effervescent presence. We can’t wait to see him again and hear about all of his college adventures.

Steven, if you’re reading this- don’t forget to brush your teeth, go to your classes, and above all else- make the most of your time there. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and you should enjoy every minute of it. We love and miss you very much.

It’s over. Officially Steven Merino is no longer a High School Student. He is officially a Freshman at San Diego State University.

Steven Graduation 253

This year, Steven blossomed into the man I knew he could be. His confidence has transformed him from a timid, invisible, lazy little boy to a funny, charismatic, lazy adult. I contribute much of his growth to his new BFF, who gave him the attention he needed just when he needed it most. I thank Liz from the bottom of my heart for helping Steven realize his worth. What I’ve been trying to do for 18 years, you achieved in 6 months.

One of Steven’s greatest strengths has been his ability to choose the right friends- most of which are moving on to UCLA, Berkley, USC, etc., scholarships in hand. Marshall Fundamental’s class of 2010 is truly remarkable, ranking 23rd among 27,000 public high schools in the United States. We will be paying close attention to Jack and Erin Colletta, Michael Carrandi, Josephine Kinney, Lance Ridenoure, and Randy Watson, all Don Benito Alumnus who have been with Steven since Kindergarten. I am happy and proud to say that they are the future of our nation.

We now are tasked with trying to prepare Steven for college life, where he has to feed himself, get himself to school, wake himself up, wash his own clothes, and live with someone else who won’t be as tolerant as we have been. I have a strong feeling that we will be making frequent trips to San Diego in the Fall to keep him on track…

The scariest thing to me is imagining the Merino Household without Steven. He is definitely the spirit of the house- keeping everyone entertained and with smiles on our faces. His absence will be felt deeply and constantly. I really don’t know how I’m going to deal with it. I’m crying just writing about it, so I will stop…

Steven, we are very proud of you and love you dearly. Congats on your completion of this critical stage in your life. On to the next stage…

Love,

Dad.

Senior Dedication

We continue our series of Steven’s Senior Moments (following his Prom Festivities), with a full-page dedication we put in Marshall Fundamental’s 2010 Yearbook:

Next up: Graduation!!!!

Let the Festivities Begin…

As Steven’s Senior year winds down, the fun part begins. Last weekend was Marshall Fundamental’s Senior Prom held at Calamigos Equestrian Center in Burbank. As the event drew closer, Steven had the idea of having the Merino Home as the hub for all of his friends to gather before the Prom, take pictures, and coordinate carpools.

Christy saw this as an opportunity to spruce up the backyard, prepare some ‘Mock-tails’ and snacks, and give the crew a proper send off. I saw this as an opportunity to take a crap load of pictures so the kids didn’t have to worry about paying an exorbitant amount of cash for a junky picture with a cheap background.

I guess I wasn’t the only one with that idea as all of the kids’ parents arrived at our house with cameras in hand ready to snap away. With 26 students and at least as many family members, our backyard resembled a post-Oscar party. The cameras were going off like the Paparazzi around Brad and Angelina.

Here is Steven with his date, Liz:

Merino Track Time

We are all familiar with Steven’s Football career, and some of you know about his brief stint on Marshall’s varsity Basketball team. Now Steven is completing his trifecta by competing on Marshall’s Varsity Track Team. His strong events are the 100m, 200m and 4 by 100m relay. He also does Shot Put, but it’s not his strength (literally). It’s actually quite amazing to see Steven running so fast. In the race depicted by the photo below, Steven actually placed 1st. Not bad Asthma Boy!

We all know that David is the aspiring actor in the family, but did you know that Steven could channel his charismatic persona into a theatrical performance? Neither did we…

Steven’s new favorite Laker is number 12, Shannon Brown- arguably one of the most exciting players to watch on the squad. He is known for his gynourmous vertical leap and his ability to slam the ball with authority. Here is a photo-chopped representation of what Steven would look like if he had Shannon Brown’s Skills:
Steven as Shannon Brown

Steven has started a trend at Marshall Fundamental High School by “Shannon Brown-ing” his fellow peers. He starts the ritual by walking up behind the sometimes unsuspecting victim and stating- “Guess Who’s Checked into the Game…”, followed by his leapfrogging the fully erect individual while screaming “SSSSHHHHAAANNNOOONNNNN BBBRRROOOOWWWNNN!!!!!!!” with one hand in the air grasping an imaginary basketball.

Here is Steven demonstrating the ritual to the family on Thanksgiving:

And now, video proof has surfaced as Steven “Shannon Browns” 3 classmates at the SAME TIME!!!

An End of an Era…

The fat lady has sung… the jersey has been hung for the last time in Steven’s 4-year football career. This year has been fairly successful for Steven. He got his first touchdown, two-point conversion, interception, forced fumble, fumble recovery, and onside kick recovery, all in one season. A season that also saw a 4-year losing streak snapped- an experience we will never forget.

Here is a short video snapshot of Steven’s career:

Touchdown!!!

Well, it finally happened… Steven got his…

It’s only taken four years of blood sweat and tears, but the payoff was worth it.

I’ll let the video speak for itself:

When the High School Football season started two weeks ago, we were cautiously optimistic about Marshall’s hopes for winning a game. It was the first time in 4 years that the Eagles football team had a coach return for a consecutive season. A 31-game losing streak can really take its toll. Imagine what the players felt when their fellow Marshall students jeered them for being part of a losing tradition. It was almost a joke. The school didn’t even have enough players on the JV team to play in the first week, which meant that Marshall forfeited the game. We’ve been going to Marshall Football games (home and away) for each of Steven’s four years at Marshall, and sometimes, we were the only ones in the stands.

After last week’s 34-0 loss to Salesion, it certainly looked like history was going to repeat itself. The boys’ confidence that showed a glimmer of light at the beginning of the season was all but extinguished. The only bright side to the week was one JV student’s efforts to recruit five new players to the JV team, just enough to play in this week’s game- not that they had any hope to win, but all the kids really wanted to do was play.

And play they did! On a hot Thursday afternoon on Marshall’s pathetic excuse for a football field, Marshall’s JV team stepped up to the proverbial plate and played their hearts out against Poly Technic. By no means was it a pretty game- Marshall didn’t score one point on offense. But it was the defense that kept them in the game. Not only did they hold Poly to only one touchdown, but Marshall’s defense picked up a fumble and ran the ball in for a touchdown, putting 6 points on the board- a welcome sight after so many games going scoreless. Late in the game, Marshall also forced a safety, which added 2 more points and putting them up for good by one point. Mark was part of that experience- playing offense, defense, and special teams. Being his first football game ever, he showed confidence and heart- making key tackles and blocks, earning him defensive player-of-the-game accolades from the coaching staff.

Now that JV won, with the Varsity team watching and celebrating with them, the pressure was mounting for the Varsity team to take care of business on Friday afternoon. After JV’s game, all of the Varsity players were chanting to each other- Win, or Die… Win, or Die. They certainly didn’t want to hear it for the rest of the year that JV is better than Varsity.

Friday’s Varsity game was also at Marshall vs. Poly Technic. The cheerleaders were out in force, and the marching band played their hearts out in the beating sun- the two groups constituting more than half of the crowd gathered to watch the game.

The game started in familiar fashion. Marshall coughing up a fumble on the opening drive, putting Poly in a position to score on the very next play. Just like that, it was 7-0. Before long, it was 10-0, and you could see the players start to doubt themselves on the field and on the sideline. But soon enough, things turned around. Marshall was moving the ball, and making stops on defense, preventing Poly from getting in scoring range on several possessions. Marshall’s first touchdown was a beauty. On fourth and goal from the 3 yardline with less than 10 seconds left in the half, Marshall’s quarterback plunged toward the goalline only to be stopped short by about a yard and a half. But the rest of the team refused to allow him to go down and they formed a wave of muscle, fat, sweat, and utter determination to push him forward over the goalline for a touchdown.

Marshall's First Touchdown Versus Poly Technic

That was just the beginning. Marshall racked up 23 more points before Poly was able to score again late in the fourth quarter. The two teams traded a couple more touchdowns before the dust settled, and the final score read 36-24. Marshall Wins! Marshall WINS!! MARSHALL WINS!!! The crowd went wild, and the players jumped, danced and embraced each other as if they won the Superbowl. As they should. Yes, it was only one win, but a win that was 4 years in the making. A win that I personally have been wanting to see every time we went to the game- every week for four years. I can’t imagine how the boys feel. I am just so proud of my two boys that were able to be a part of it, and for the rest of the boys that deserve to know how it feels to win. I just hope the rest of the school appreciates how hard they worked for the spirit of the school. They endured the effort, pain, and heartache for far too long to not reap the benefits of victory. The school should be proud, the Eagles are soaring again- even if it is for only one game- the glory will last a lifetime for these young men.

GO EAGLES!!!
